Reflection

“One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.  Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?”

The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian”

Exodus 2:11-15

Moses had a choice. He could have decided to look away, be indifferent to Israelites’ suffering in Egypt and go on with his comfortable life and status in a society.

His attempts to make a difference would fall apart as he was betrayed by the very people he was trying to help. Thus, he lost everything he had and was forced to seek refuge and protection in foreign lands. It is hard to imagine the scope of disappointment and betrayal Moses experienced from humanity and God.

While people might let us down, God will never do. At the right time and place, God stepped into the life of Moses, enabled and empowered him to accomplish and do so much more than he ever could imagine. When Moses has probably forgotten and given up on his desire to make a difference in the life of his nation, God led him back to his dream and liberation of not just one or two Israelites but the entire nation.

God operates on his own schedule. And if we do not give up and give in to disappointment, He will indeed bless and empower us to make a true difference in our lives and for the world.
